17. Extra Hitter (EH)
The intent of the EH rule is to allow an additional player to participate in the game.
- The EH is optional, but if one is used, it must be made known prior to the start of the game and be listed on the scoring sheet in the regular batting order. If the EH is used, the EH must be used the entire game. If a team fails to complete the game with 10 batters due to an ejected player or injury, an automatic out is taken for any batters less than 10.
- If the EH is used, all 10 of the starting line-up must bat and any 9 of those 10 may play defense. Defensive positions may be changed, but the batting order must remain the same.
- The EH must begin playing defense no later than the start of the fourth inning and play a defensive position for at least two consecutive innings. The EH is then replaced by a member of the starting line-up. The starting EH may re-enter the EH position after playing two consecutive innings of defense.
18. Run rule. See General Rule 30.
